Want to Try a Sensory Friendly Vacation Bible School? I’ll Help!

I have been getting a lot of questions regarding the sensory friendly Vacation Bible School which I recently completed at the church I attend. I’m happy that so many people are interested and are wanting to do something similar at their church. I’m glad to help!

I have put together a manual for you that will be available on my website for free. If you would like a copy, simply send me an email at jason@jasonmillerhealth.com and I’ll send it to you as soon as it’s completed.

I first had the idea for a sensory friendly vacation bible school last year when I helped out. During the opening songs and skits, I noticed a few kids sitting with their hands on their ears looking miserable, as the music and other children were very loud. So, for our sensory group this year, we had a separate opening. Josh Kellar, our children’s minister and leader of our church’s vacation bible school, quickly agreed to do a second opening song and skit time, immediately following the opening for the children in our sensory group.

The difference for our group was that we had the music turned down lower and the house lights on. The skits were done on the floor closer to the children, not up on the stage. There were no loud moments, no yelling to get the kids excited. Our kids loved it because they still could participate in the opening and it was at a sensory level with which they were comfortable. Stay tuned for more tips!
